GSM means grams per square metre. It tells you how heavy a fabric is. Heavier fabric feels thicker and warmer, and it usually costs more.
Roughly what the numbers mean
These are rough guides, not rules:
- Light T-shirts and training tops: about 130 to 180 GSM
- Medium sweatshirts: about 250 to 300 GSM
- Heavy hoodies: about 320 GSM and above
Why weight is not everything
Two hoodies with the same GSM can feel different. The yarn, the way the fabric is knitted and the finish all change the feel. Brushed fleece feels soft and warm on the inside. French terry has small loops inside and feels lighter and cooler.
How to ask for the right weight
- Send a hoodie you like and tell us you want it to feel the same
- Or tell us the weight you want, and we will suggest fabrics near it
- Ask for a swatch and a sample, so you can feel it before you order
Think about the season and the customer
A heavy hoodie suits cold places and a premium feel. A lighter one suits spring, travel and warm countries. If you sell all year, you might offer both.
If you are not sure, tell us who will wear it and where, and we will suggest a weight.
